Wellness Programs Reduce Medical Costs
Employers using wellness programs are seeing a 6.1 percent average annual medical cost trend reduction and a 13.5 percent average annual medical cost trend reduction among members with core conditions, according to a new study.
The study was conducted by Zoe Consulting Inc. on behalf of Interactive Health Solutions Inc, a provider of performance-based health management solutions for employers.
Asthma, coronary heart disease, chronic obstructive lung disease, diabetes and hypertension are examples of core conditions, and many of the health effects from core conditions can be managed through early detection as well as compliance with prescribed therapies.
The study also finds a 7.7 percent reduction in per member per month during the survey’s final year, and 85 percent of members maintained or lessen their health risk levels.
Additionally, respondents spent fewer days out of the workplace because of workers’ compensation and short-term disability claims, the study reveals. In fact, respondents returned to their jobs up to nine days sooner while under workers’ compensation and 17 days sooner for those one short-term disability.
"Employers are continuously searching for responsible ways to reduce health care spending, which has grown to over 25 percent of total labor expense," says Joseph O'Brien, president and CEO of Interactive Health Solutions. "We have a long history of pioneering game-changing wellness programs. The analysis conducted by Zoe Consulting confirms our wellness programs deliver meaningful results for individuals and their employers."
This independent analysis is based on multiple years of medical claim data from two comparable population groups.

Things Competing For My Share of Mind
The end of summer has got me feeling down...but these links are helping improve my mood:
- I dare you not to smile after watching this Bob Ross remix
- Inside the Actor's Studio, '10 Questions' remixed
- The questions, so you can ask you and yours:
- What is your favorite word?
- What is your least favorite word?
- What turns you on?
- What turns you off?
- What sound or noise do you love?
- What sound or noise do you hate?
- What is your favorite curse word?
- What profession other than yours would you like to attempt? (NO one said Human Resources!)
- What profession would you not like to do?
- If heaven exists what would you like to hear God say when you arrive at the pearly gates?

Is your company on this list??
You’ve got your most professional outfit on, copies of your resume in a portfolio, shiny shoes, sweaty hands, and you’re imaging everyone in their underwear…you are on your way to an interview! As if these encounters aren’t stressful enough, some are truly worse than others. Glassdoor has just recently put out their annual list of the 25 HardestCompanies to Interview For. Not surprisingly, Amazon, Facebook and Google are on the list, but there are others that might be surprising!
One sample question from an interview for a Software Engineer at Amazon asks “Write the code to read in characters from a file and print out the top 10 most used. What if they are 32 bit characters? What if it’s a 4GB file and you only have 1GB of ram?” Anyone want to take a stab at that one???
What is the toughest question you’ve ever been asked on an interview?

On Wellness...
According to an employee wellness report released by ComPsych Corp., employees are experiencing the effects of significant life changes as well as work-life stress:
- 52% said they had experienced major life or work changes (e.g., move, death of a loved one, change in job responsibilities) in the past year.
- 38% reported being unable to stop thinking about problems.
- 35% said minor problems throw them for a loop.
- 31% reported feeling anxious or tense much of the time.
- 15% had trouble coping with stress load.
In addition, employees’ current health habits leave much room for improvement:
- 29% have high blood pressure.
- 25% have high cholesterol.
- 17% of employees get no exercise; another 31% only exercise one or two days per week.
The annual wellness report compiled health risk assessment results across ComPsych’s book of business, providing a snapshot of employee physical/emotional health as well as current lifestyle and habits.
"Employees' lives continue to be disrupted by such things as problems with housing and changes in job status, all as a result of a slow-growth economy and lingering effects of the recession," said Dr. Richard A. Chaifetz, chairman and CEO of ComPsych. "There is a need for corporate wellness strategies that focus on stress as part of overall health improvement. Programs that address both emotional and physical health, such as EAPs combined with integrated programs, will have the best outcomes for employers."

Going for the Gold in Flex Work, what HR can learn from the Olympics…
For more traditional employees, this really is a radical way of thinking—the idea of working outside of the office, away from the watchful eyes of supervisors seems crazy. Won’t employees take advantage of this freedom, seeing it as a chance to run errands, save money on daycare, or catch up on their DVR? Ranger argues that while technology has evolved significantly over the past century, the way we work has stayed the same. “The modern office is a strange relic, an invention of the 19th and 20th centuries designed to allow managers to keep an eye on indolent staff. For many, the working day starts with checking email over breakfast and continues into the evening: the 9 to 5 is an anachronism, so the office has to change too.”
Studies are continuing to prove that working remotely actually develops more productive and effective employees. The 2011 Telework Association Productivity Survey revealed that people working from home are less stressed, have fewer interruptions and have a stronger sense of loyalty to their company than those that work every day in the office. Not only can employees be more productive in a quiet space away from the office, but they can also be more innovative and creative with a little change of scenery. The benefits of people working from home extend beyond just the business. With the average commute to work in the Boston area running just under 60 minutes round trip*, we owe it to the ozone to lay off a bit. We also owe it to our health. Turns out commuting for as little as 10 miles a day can increase your blood pressure and put you at risk for diabetes and heart disease. Check out this video highlighting the health effects—both physical and mental—of commuting (the guy on the hood?!? yikes…).
While the author agrees that it will take a while for many companies to shift their way of thinking, it is a good time to at least “jump-start a conversation around how we organize our working lives.” What do you think about working remotely? Is this a benefit currently offered by your employer?
